Author C.J. Domino cooks up a scandalous dish with her debut novel, Sideline Ho, which leaves a bittersweet taste. This story is told from the perspective of single mother and mistress, Nikole Freeman, who is infatuated by cars, clothes, and jewelry. Forever motivated to come up on a baller with money, Nikole gets involved in two love triangles.

One affair is with her best friend Bebe's big time lawyer husband Brian. The other affair is with her son's married father and ex-NBA player, Terrance.

Nikole's decisions get complicated when she drops out of college and is cut off of her trust fund by her father, a high profile judge. Without her parents financial support, Nikole faces eviction and a stolen car charge from the rental company. The plot thickens when Nikole stops receiving child support from her son's father and finds out she is pregnant by Brian.

Sideline Ho delves into the life of the glamorous and scandalous so much that at times the perspective became annoying due to Nikole's narrow minded, low self-esteem driven decisions. Her chatter throughout the novel is overbearing and jolts the story. However, the novel resonates because it presents several issues such as infidelity, fathers not paying child support, domestic violence, and the serious effects of being silent about personal tragedies.

A quick read, Sideline Ho separates the women from the girls when it comes to knowing why your spouse cheats. I'd recommend to readers who like baby momma drama and soap-opera-like plots.

What did you like best about this book?
I like that the author took a risk in telling the story from the perspective of a sideline hoe, a disliked person who is satisfied with being on the side.

What did you dislike about this book?
I disliked that the author did not make the main character compelling like the other side characters Bebe or Royce.

How can the author improve this book?
The author can enhance the book by providing less of the chatty conversation from Nikole that becomes redundant. Nikole had the opportunity to become a much more complex character if she was not so stereotypical and predictable.
