The Bishop's Daughter

Tiffany L. Warren has written an interesting and refreshing novel entitled The Bishop’s Daughter.  Darrin Brainbridge, a freelance blogger decides to travel from Cleveland to Atlanta in pursuit of his first big story, an expose on Bishop Kumal Prentiss.  Upon arriving in Atlanta, Darrin initially thinks his journalistic instinct of scandal brewing in the congregation was wrong.  However, he quickly learns his instincts were completely on point. 
 
We come into Darrin’s life when he is a true player at heart.  He’s your typical pretty boy metro sexual type of guy.  He keeps a fresh pedicure, has a slamming bachelor pad decked out with baller style furniture, and he can make ladies melt with his “Emeril Lagasse” cooking skills.  Darrin is a great catch for any woman, complete with deep pockets from his parents’ transportation business. 
 
Enter Emoni Prentiss.  When Darrin sees Emoni for the first time at the Freedom of Life Church mega-church in Atlanta, he is intrigued to say the least until he finds out the she is ‘The Bishop’s Daughter’.  Little does Darrin know, Emoni is intrigued as well and would love to get to know Darrin better.  Eventually, the two start dating and Darrin is torn between hurting the woman and family he has grown to love by exposing their secrets and making a name for him in the journalism world. 

Told from the perspective of both Darrin and Emoni, The Bishop’s Daughter was a delight to read.  This is a book about forgiveness and finding yourself.  Readers are able take a fictional journey into the lives of multiple characters.  Eventually, you arrive with Darrin at his moment of self-discovery--the point in his life when he begins to see the errors of his ways and starts to imagine a path toward redemption.

Don't expect everything to be tied together neatly at the end. Warren leaves the readers with a few loose ends to ponder.  I like that - an author demanding the participation of the reader after the novel is completed.  I will definitely continue to look for more work by this author in the future. 

What did you like about the book? 
I liked the author’s ability to write different voices.  She is able to tell the story from both a male and female perspective.  I also enjoyed the unexpected ending of the book and the various Biblical scriptures throughout – very thought provoking. 
 
What did you dislike about the book? 
In my opinion, the events that took place in the last few chapters of the book seemed a bit rushed. 
 
What could the author do to improve the book?
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.  However, as I stated, some of the last few chapters moved too fast.  Perhaps slowing some of the chapters down a bit would help.  For example, the relationship between Emoni and Darrin progressed rather quickly.
