Michel Moore
Urban Book Source
March 2006
Michel MooreBorn and raised in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, Michel Moore was always drawn to the spoken and written word. Infamous among her close friends for writing short stories, she has affectionately been dUBSed “Keeper of the Past.” Michel’s debut novel Say U Promise, brings a tale of two sisters on two roads diverged, which is an Essence Magazine Best-Seller.

UBS: What do you think of the urban fiction trend as of right now? And what is your take on the bashing of this growing genre?
Michel:
I’m overjoyed to see so many up and coming talented writers shine. As for the bashing of the genre, let’s call it what it really is...blatant hating! Most urban fiction authors start off by being trapped in the so called ‘Hood’ and look to pen and paper to escape. If they can make a little bit of money and have that magic writing touch, who cares what all the condescending haters have to say. It’s enough pie in the sky for everyone to eat!

UBS: What’s next for Michel Moore?
Michel:
The next few months are going to be mad hectic. I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling. I need to get out there and meet and greet some of the readers who put Say U Promise on the Essence Bestseller List. I want to hit as many cities as my pockets can stand. (LOL)

UBS: What inspires you to write?
Michel:
Inspiration for novels comes from a quick glance out of my West Side Detroit home. Trust me when I say this. I don’t just write urban fiction from my imagination, unfortunately for now, I live it.

UBS: What is your novel Say U Promise about? Can you give us a little intro?
Michel:
Say U Promise is about two identical twin sisters. Their parents get set up and maliciously slaughtered in a drug deal gone wrong. The girls get taken in by their maternal aging grandmother and suffer all the turmoil that comes along with growing up in the ghetto. As always, it’s two paths in life that a person can opt to take. Each girl chooses a different direction causing a chain of events to unfold, including murder, money, mayhem and mistaken identity. It’s a real page turner!

UBS: How long have you been writing?
Michel:
Although Say U Promise is the first novel that I have released for the public to read, I’ve been writing since my early teen years.

UBS: What types of books do you read when you are not writing your own work? And who are some of your favorite authors?
Michel:
I read a lot of Urban Fiction. I still have a lot of sequels to catch up on. I have them on my desk, but I have to find the time. I enjoy K’wan Foye, Nikki Turner, Vickie Stringer, Joy Jossel, and all the TCP Vets.

UBS: Do you stumble upon writer’s block? If so, how do you work your way out of it?
Michel:
Yeah I suffer from slight writer’s block from time to time, but after a Combo Meal, (super-sized of course), a bag of candy and a huge glass of grape Kool-aid, I’m back on track! (LOL)

UBS: What drives you to continue to write moving tales?
Michel:
It’s like a form of tension release. I think that I’ve lived on the edge so long that if I didn’t write, a sister might explode. I love bringing my characters to life on paper. You know how it is when you wish you could say a lot of things, but can’t because folk would think you were out your rabbit ass mind? Well in my writing some of my characters speak for me.

UBS: Is it hard being a self-published author?
Michel:
HELL YES! I think all self-published authors can testify to that one. In between all the shady book distributors passing out rubber checks, a few nickel slick street vendors and huge out of pocket expenses, we all tread water trying to stay a float until the big boys come knocking.

UBS: Do you have any upcoming books?
Michel:
My new novel entitled Get It How Ya Live will be released in late March, followed by the sequel to my first book. It’s entitled Say U Promise...Again!

UBS: Lastly, where do you see yourself in this industry ten years from now?
Michel:
Ten years from now, you’ll find Michel Moore on a warm tropical island soaking up some sun. By that time I will have helped a lot of young writers make their dreams a reality, finally got a few payments from the distributors (LOL) and on the Wall of Fame of Urban Fiction Writers!
