Kwame Teague Exclusive
by Seth "Soul Man" Ferranti
January 2007
Kwame Teague is the biggest name in hip-hop fiction that nobody knows. The incarcerated author who is doing two life sentences in North Carolina for crimes he says he is innocent of, penned the Teri Woods produced Dutch series and The Adventures of Ghetto Sam. Clearly Dutch and Dutch II are two of street lit’s classic and readers have been eagerly anticipating Dutch III for years.
But due to some internal conflicts Dutch III has not seen the light of day, at least through Teri Woods publishing. Here at Urban Book Source we have gotten an exclusive interview with Kwame Teague, one of the hottest authors in urban fiction and the writer who put Teri Woods back on the map (after True to the Game that is.) Meet Kwame Teague—Straight from the penitentiary.
The biggest question on everyone’s minds is when is Dutch III dropping?
2007. Defnitely 07 and you can hold me to it, insha allah.
What were the causes of delay?
Teri and I are both very driven individuals, so we bump heads often. But I believe we better understand one another and can now move forward.
Besides dropping Dutch III, what else is in the agenda for 07? You mentioned C-murder in our last interview. Doesn’t he also have a book out?
No doubt, it’s called Death Around the Corner and its that fire. Go cop that now. He did his thing. But that’s just the tip of the barrel, we got a whole clip. Tru Publishing is set to open shop in 07 and out first book is by— I can’t even tell you, but because of me cats gonna be like whoa! Then there’s Tru Films and we’re looking to do Dutch the movie by the spring and we’re also looking for street books we can adopt for films as well. We won’t forget the streets when we eat and that there is my word.
That’s peace. What about your case? Is progress also being made there?
No doubt. We’re in the process of doing a documentary on it. Also I’m set to go before the courts in early 07 as well. But I still need folks to hit up my MySpace site and whatever else you can do is appreciated.
So in 07 you may be home?
Insha Allah, which means Allah willing.
You’ve been down 13 years, what’s the first thing you’re going to do?
Wifey (smile) that there is my heart. But as far as do do, like moves, I’m a run for President.
Whoa! President of what?
The United States. I’m buggin’, but hey, why not? Here I am in prison for a crime I didn’t do and Bush is in the white house for crimes he did (election 2000). Bottom line, as a Muslim and as an artist, I feel a responsibility to be a part of the solution and not the problem. In whatever capacity, whether it be running for President or doing street programs for the kids. My goal ain’t a Bentley, or bloody diamonds, shine, stunt, or flash. My goal isn’t even to be known for being a part of the solution. I was raised on the rule that says “those that know won’t tell you and those that don’t know, can’t tell you.”
Like Dutch said, you can’t stop what you can’t see.
Exactly.
