Keisha Ervin entered the literary game by storm with her debut novel, Me and My Boyfriend. With a writing style all her own, Keisha brings you in step with black love and the way it really happens; No fairy tales, or honey covered love stories here, just the truth.
Me and My Boyfriend was followed up by Ms. Ervin’s heart wrenching, semi-autobiographical sophomore novel, Chyna Black, which worked its way into the hearts of readers and tops of bestsellers list such as Essence. With her fourth novel just completed and her third novel Mina’s Joint freshly on shelves, Keisha Ervin promises to bring you more drama-filled, eye-opening urban tales.
Currently Keisha resides in St. Louis, MO where she continues to perfect her craft, while raising her son.
UBS: What do you think of the urban fiction trend as of right now? And what is your take on the bashing of this growing genre?
Keisha: Frankly, I don’t look at it as a trend. A trend is something that may come and go or only last for a while. I look at urban fiction as something that will stand the test of time. You know there was a time when people thought that hip-hop music was a trend now twenty something years later it is still around and is the number one genre of music so to me urban fiction will always be around. I love it. I’m its biggest fan.
I think the people that bash urban fiction, are people who either A don’t know anything about it or B just don’t live it.
UBS: Any upcoming projects?
Keisha: Yes, I just finished my fourth novel, Hold U Down and I’m working on the third installment to the Me & My Boyfriend series. Also I have a clothing line called Critique that I’m trying to get off the ground.
UBS: Your new novel Mina’s Joint, what is it about?
Keisha: Mina’s Joint is a continuation of sort to Me & My Boyfriend, my first novel. It is about a twenty-five year old woman named Mina who owns a full service salon. She’s engaged to the Mayor of St. Louis’ son but she is unhappy and being abused. Mina wants to end the relationship but doesn’t know how to. Out of nowhere her childhood sweetheart Victor returns. Mina then must deal with her feelings for Victor and while dealing with other issues and situations that turn her life upside down.
UBS: Do you come across writer’s block? And how do you get over it?
Keisha: I really haven’t experienced writer’s block. Personally I only write when I feel inspired to. I’m not one of those authors who can write all day and night. That’s just not me. I can go weeks sometime without writing a thing but when I do I try to make sure that I have something interesting to say.
UBS: Who are some of your favorite authors? What types of books do you read when you are not writing your own work?
Keisha: My favorite authors are Teri Woods, TuShonda L. Whitaker, and K’Wan. I mainly read urban fiction novels but I told myself that this year I am going to broaden my horizons. I really love a good love story. That’s my favorite type of book to read.
UBS: Which one of your books did you enjoy writing the most? And why?
Keisha: I would have to say Mina’s Joint and Hold U Down. Mina’s Joint was the easiest book I’ve written thus far. I wanted to show the people who read my work another side of me. Personally I find myself to be very funny so I wanted to show the readers that. So far they seem to get and like it a lot. I had so much fun creating Delicious, Rita, and Berniece.
Hold U Down was fun too because I felt like I was getting back to my old style of writing. This book has so much of St. Louis in it and so much of my own characteristics in it. I think the readers are gonna love it.
UBS: Will you ever publish books in the future?
Keisha: Maybe, it would have to be something that I was really committed and interested in for me to self-publish it.
UBS: Do you stick with a writing schedule? How much writing do you do per day?
Keisha: No, I don’t have a writing schedule. Like I said I write when I’m inspired by something I’ve either seen, heard, or been through. I really have to be in a creative mood to write. Even though I don’t write everyday I do jot down ideas often throughout the day.
UBS: Will you ever write in a different genre, such as Fantasy or Sci-fi?
Keisha: No, I don’t think so. Love stories are my thing. I really love telling stories that have to do with human emotions between a man and women. Nothing is better to me. I love the whole make up and break up thing. Maybe that’s why I’m single.
